14.07.05: TSLM Members Form a Human Road

Car horns hooted and drivers waved their support as an 80-strong group lined up to show the width of the proposed M6-Link Road in Torrisholme. Youngsters, babies and dogs joined TSLM members on Wednesday as we stood 25 m (83 ft) wide beneath poles 4.8m (16ft) high, to indicate the size of the monster road. This ‘human road’ made a powerful visual image, showing how the beautiful open fields at Broadoak Corner would be decimated by the concrete flyover. But the mood amongst members, in orange campaign t-shirts, was upbeat as we posed for the local press and drew the attention of passers-by. We had the unexpected bonus of an audience of joggers who ran the length of our ‘road’, noting our banners and giving us the thumbs-up as they stampeded past. Pictures of the publicity stunt will appear in this week’s Lancaster Guardian and Thursday’s Lancashire Evening Post (page 6), and possibly next week’s Visitor & Citizen. For safety reasons not all members and supporters were invited to the event, only those living closest (due to traffic on the corner).
