In this first book by Belinda Bauer, we are introduced to Stephen Lamb a twelve-year-old who is trying to find the body of his uncle. In fairness, I would expect to see improvement in later novels.
Belinda’s writing style is beautiful, her words slide off the page and create the images for us as if we’re watching them. Belinda Bauer has produced a great first book and one that is in my top five reads in Very formulaic and no surprises.
That taking it was the same as not taking it; that conscience was just a self-imposed bar to pleasure; that suffering was so transitory that a million children might be tortured and killed in the merest blink of a cosmic eye. We know he’s nearing the end of a prison sentence. It isn’t a who-dunnit either.
He writes letters to the killer to ask where the body is. The impact severely affected his family. The juxtaposition between the sad, lonely and determined young boy and the disgustingly evil serial killer worked really well for me – although the book isn’t particularly fast-paced by any means, I found it to still be a real page-turner. Steven’s been spending all his spare time digging the moor, looking for his uncle’s body, but even a 12 year old can work out how futile that is.
Unkindness just about all around is saying it lightly. Premise is a little boy is looking for the body of his uncle who died as a child at the hands of a serial killer.
Not blwcklands speak of the horrors of the victims and Avery. The cat and mouse game is intriguing – particularly the prospect of Stephen being Avery’s next victim. To and with such a young person, it truly is creepy.
