The book we received, and upon which the workshop was based? Coaching for Improved Work Performance. It was brilliant then, and it’s brilliant now. There must have been around 40 attendees, all HR professionals, and every single one of us was open-mouthed when Mr.


Fournies asked us “why is it that employees don’t do what you want them to do? It was an eye-opener that I’ve never forgotten, and even though I’ve just bought the updated version of the book I’ve still got my original Whether you’re a manager, a supervisor or a Boy Scout troop leader, this book will make you understand what you need to do to get commitment, comprehension and great performance from your team.

A lot of the book feels very old fashioned and geared towards a strictly hierachical organizational culture of obedience, with mentions of what to do when employees yell at you and other references to a work environment that is far more antagonistic than any Ferdiand worked in, and certainly not relevent to my current organization I’m the general manager of a 40 person ferdlnand and purchased the book as part of an effort to improve the company.

The main value of the book to me is it gives an analytical method for determining the cause of worker peformance problems, starting from the premise that people don’t do dumb things on purpose. The analysis ferdinqnd to get the manager to understand the situation from the workers point of view, with a checklist of things like “worker doesn’t know how to do the job” or “worker doesn’t think task is important”, which are often overlooked by managers as causes of performance problems.

I’m happy with the purchase because I got something out of it but I don’t feel it’s enough by itself to get great performance from your team. I’ve been a proponent of this book for several decades now, in its many incarnations. I’ve lent out and replaced so many copies that I’ve lost count. I’ve recently made it required reading for all pperformance my supervisors, and have already begun to see improvements in problem solving, employee relations, and overall morale.

This is not a manual for team building, nor is it a psychological study, or approach, to people management. Rather, it is a practical step-by-step guide to understanding why particular employees are under-performing, and a plan, with tips, on how to help that individual improve their performance.

Most importantly to me, at this stage of my career, it helps leaders, supervisors, and managers develop a better perspective of their true relationship with their staff; as Fournies puts it at is baldest “you need them more than they need you”. I believe it fits well with the Lean-TPS concepts of Employee Empowerment, and provides an excellent tool for Lean Change Leaders to persude those reluctant to accept those changes.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who directs the work of others. This in one of only a few books I have read more than twice and I love it every time. Each time I read it I pick up something new and add it to my repetwa. I have had success with these techniques for 30 years and my employees love it.

Because I have used the coaching process, my departments have earned awards and status in the company. I love this book for its practicality. Few books actually will guide you through the precise nuance of a difficult management conversation.


This book practically scripts it! In particular this book really sells the idea of actually managing people to add value, as opposed to just assuming that they should come self-managed and firing them if they aren’t.

He describes employees as people who are effectively renting their behavior to the firm, and that all you really want to do is manage that behavior that you are renting. No need to make it bigger than that or try to complicate things by trying to guess what’s going on in their heads. Just focus on behavior!

It’s all very practical and it makes sense! One person found this helpful. I wish I had found this book when I started managing people 20 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of painful trial and error. It is a remarkably practical guide that addresses the main problem that many managers face: It includes examples of realistic conversations including the extended silences that often happen, and the brush-off responses, the stalemates.

It is also a book that can be constructively shared with your entire team – including those with performance issues – as it helps defuse all emotion and keeps the conversations on the actual and observable behaviors that are getting in the way of the business. We often assume that when we hire people that they know how to perform the work that we are asking them to do.

I’ve learned that ten years of experience often means one year ten times. I recommend this book to all who supervise people. I purchased one of the first editions many years ago.
