According to Rerum novarum and the whole social doctrine of the Church, the social nature of man is not completely fulfilled in the State, but is realized in various intermediary groups, beginning with the family and including economic, social, political and cultural groups which stem from human nature itself and have their own autonomy, always with a view to the common good.
Continuing our reflections, and referring also to what has been said in the Encyclicals Laborem exercens and Sollicitudo rei socialis, we have to add that the fundamental error of socialism is anthropological in nature.
The first consequence was an encounter in some countries between the Church and the workers’ movement, which came about as a result of an ethical and explicitly Christian reaction against a widespread situation of injustice. It is his disciplined work in descagrar collaboration with others that makes possible the creation of ever more extensive working communities which can be relied upon to transform man’s natural and human environments.
Pope Leo XIII was aware of the need for a sound theory of the State in order to ensure the normal development of man’s spiritual and temporal activities, both of which are indispensable. Man fulfills himself by using his intelligence and freedom. Nevertheless, the Christian life involves a struggle against temptation and the forces of evil. The Pope wished to proclaim this right within the context of the other rights and duties of workers, notwithstanding the general opinion, even in his day, that such questions pertained exclusively to an individual’s private life. When there is question of defending the rights of individuals, the defenceless and the poor have a claim to special consideration. Given the utter necessity of certain economic conditions and of political stability, the decision to invest, that is, to offer people an opportunity to make good use of their own labour, is also determined by an attitude of human sympathy and trust in Providence, which reveal the human quality of the person making such decisions. God gave the earth to the whole human race for the sustenance of all its members, without excluding or favouring anyone.
