What is the promise of the wolf? The ending had me biting my nails, but for the most part, this book was spent introducing Kaala and what it means to be rorothy wolf. I won’t get into the details involving her predicament so as not to spoil it, but if you aren’t seeing and feeling things from her perspective after the first chapter, you might as well put down the book. Dorothy Hearst is the author of the Wolf Chronicles trilogy. And yet wolves, the animals from which dogs evolved, inspire such mixed emotions. She is guided in the direction of the humans by a spirit-wolf whom only she can see. Promise of the Wolves is written in a first-person point of view from Kaala’s perspective. When Kaala comes upon a human girl about to drown in the river, however, she cannot abandon her. I eat a lot more meat than I used to, and I have an unfortunate tendency to growl at inappropriate moments.
In another scene, during a battle between Kaala and two pups that want to kill her, she throws both of them off in a critical moment. I’ll admit I was skimming the last 75 pages or so. It had its potential but it wasn’t for me.
This book is set 14, years ago, where everything has to hunt for their own food and stuff. Open Preview See a Problem? Oddly enough, though, I felt that Hearst’s wolf characters were more authentic and real than her human characters, but that could just be due to the fact that we are introduced promide the humans much later in the story.

Until a young wolf dares to break the rules–and forever alters the relationship between wolves and the humans who share their world. Hearst created her own wolf culture, making them seem not unlike a primitive human tribe, albeit with particular wolf characteristics.
I am not sure how accurate Hearst is in her description of wolf behaviour but having Kaala, a mixed blood wolf, be allowed to remain with a pack while her mother is exiled immediately puts us on the side of Kaala as she tries to survive not just as a pup in the wild, but as an outsider in a pack.

Obviously, there is more development in some characters, like Kaala or Azzuen, than others, wolvez as a wolvea, you still get a good sense of each character.
This was a really great read. But somehow the book still dragged on. Every visit to the library for almost a month, I looked at books two and three of the Wolf Chronicles Series that were on display.

It is read from the point of view of Kaala, a young wolf trying to fit in with her pack mates but marked with a difference she can’t hide from. I made use of artistic license to take the idea further than any current research supports to place the wolves at key points in human evolution.
