If you are looking for an introduction to Mieville’s work, I’d recommend jumping right into “Perdido Street Station,” or buying LFJ, reading nothing other than “The Tain,” then reading “Perdido” and the rest of Mieville’s fine novels. His favorite method of introducing you to ANYTHING is to drop you in the middle of a situation or a city, or a worldand feed you little tidbits of an explanation until you finally know what’s going on. I’m sure I’ll never know. That’s not to say the collection is unsuccessful, but merely that it never feels weighty or important the way his Bas-Lag novels do.

A witch accidentally makes a familiar out of his own discarded flesh. Still-fond cor of Perdido Street Station make me sad that there isn’t one solid knock-your-socks-off offering here.
Mieville displays his narrative ability with the horror genre, one that he already proved towards the masterful end of the spectrum in King Rat.
